The success of Final Fantasy XVI makes me curious about how it stacks up against previous entries in the series

Final Fantasy XVI
I’m excited to see how this game pans out as we enter phase 16 of the Final Fantasy mainline series (and like, phase 1000+ if you consider spinoffs, or maybe just Final Fantasy XV side projects). Not only does the game’s action-heavy gameplay pique my interest, but the darker tone does as well (both in terms of how they can capitalise on it and/or fail with going in that darker path). Well, it looks like we’ll all be experiencing it together shortly, as XVI is apparently not getting Square Enix’s trademark last-minute delay and has instead just gone gold.
Positive signs thus far, but high hopes still remain.
Just to refresh your memory, we recently had an in-depth hands-on with Final Fantasy XVI, and our very own Eric Van Allen walked away very favourably impressed. Naturally, though, the response to XV has been mixed, and the continued high quality of XIV has fans on edge, so high expectations have been placed on this mainline entry. In his introduction, he put it best:
My primary takeaway from Final Fantasy XVI is that Square Enix is committed to creating a quality action role-playing game. Everything about XVI feels new and different from what has come before, from the team that has been gathered to the fast and engaging combat. The real test will be whether or not the action stays that excellent throughout a massive RPG journey and whether or not fans old and new take to it.
