Gadar 2 dominates the North with 3 lakh tickets, Rajinikanth’s

Film fans have a diverse selection to choose from this weekend, including OMG 2, Jailer, and Bhola Shankar. As each picture has its own audience, it’s likely that this weekend will be a bountiful one for ticket sales. Northern moviegoers have spoken, and Gadar 2 has set a new record for advance ticket sales. Already, the picture has sold over 1.3 million tickets for its opening day, and that number is likely to rise to over 2 million by Thursday night’s close. BookMyShow, an online ticket marketplace, reports that 3,000,000 people have already seen the film in cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Jaipur, Patna, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Surat.

Taran Adarsh, an expert in the film industry, has described Gadar 2 as “a lottery for the distributors and the producers” because it is the only film this year (excluding Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan) to target the “heartland” of the country.

“The advance booking is phenomenal,” he said to indianexpress.com. “The first day should be over Rs 35 crore.” The collective brain is working overtime. There will be capacity concerns at single screens due to their limited daily showings of four films, compared to the 18–20 available at multiplexes. Single-screen theatres, on the other hand, offer larger auditoriums, often seating between 1,000 and 1,200 people. That makes up for it. If there’s one movie after Pathaan that’s going to dominate the rural areas, it’s this one.

Gadar 2, directed by Anil Sharma, is the follow-up to the 2001 smash film Gadar. Sunny Deol reprises his role as Tara Singh, with Sakeena (Ameesha Patel), in this sequel. This time he’ll go to war to get Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma) back from the country next door.

In an interview with Variety, film producer and trade analyst Girish Johar said, “Craze is phenomenal in Tier 2 and 3 cities.” This gives Johar hope that Gadar 2 would do well at the box office. He disclosed that more than 4,000 theatres have committed to showing the picture and estimated an opening day gross of about Rs 25 crore, with potential for growth due to positive word of mouth.

When compared to the drama and nationalist tone of Gadar, which drew people to the theatres 22 years ago, some questioned the appeal and success of the newest. The advance reservations, however, have calmed any fears. Film critic Taran Adarsh describes Gadar 2 as a “emotion.”

He remarked, “Gadar is not your typical motion picture. It’s a feeling, to put it simply. Emotions and high drama will always be in style. There is a high degree of memorability associated with this movie because of its repeated airings on satellite networks. The response to the film’s latest theatrical re-release was phenomenal. Generations later, we still buy it when Sunny Deol gives us a hand pump. Hindustan zindabad tha, zindabad hai, zindabad rahega is memorable as well. Therefore, I anticipate a smashing success for it in theatres.

Meanwhile, Girish Johar has stated that the producers of Oh My God 2 (OMG 2) starring Akshay Kumar are playing down the film. Since they are aware of the film’s subject matter and that they cannot aim their marketing at children thanks to its ‘A’ rating, they are not resorting to excessive means to promote the film. They’re attempting the tightrope right now. Nonetheless, interest in the picture remains quite high.

BookMyShow has 45,000 sales for OMG 2, and Johar says the picture will open to between Rs 8 and 10 crore.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar, is currently in theatres, but its future is questionable as competition from Gadar 2 and OMG 2 steals the spotlight. Taran thinks there are “programming issues” happening so that everyone may see the films they want to see.

On the other hand, Girish Johar said, “Rocky Aur Rani has been a little displaced because of its release strategy.” Since Oppenheimer had preceded them, they were initially in a precarious position. Now they need to make sure that Rocky Aur Rani is well-positioned in theatres for the holiday weekend if Gadar 2 and OMG 2 fail to perform. But they need to be physically present over there for that to happen.

More on Karan Johar’s reasoning for inserting K3G references like “Keh diya na bas” and “mazaakiyaan” into Rocky Aur Rani here. “It’s not a new idea, but it always seems to work,” he said.
A majority of South Indians did not like either Jailer or Bhola Shankar, starring Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi, respectively. Distributor Akshaye Rathi predicted that Jailer would have one of the best opening weekends in the history of Tamil film.

“Jailer is looking like an unmitigated storm in Tamil Nadu and the Tamil-speaking belt across the country. The level of pre-sale ticket purchases surrounding this film is extraordinary. It has the potential to break box office records for Tamil films. Huge buzz, he exclaimed.

Already, Jailer has sold over 900,000 tickets on BookMyShow, mostly in the southern regions.
