Mithun Chakraborty has had a successful acting career lasting more than 45 years, during which he has acted in several blockbuster films in both Hindi and Bengali. Namashi, the son of a renowned actor, is making his film debut in ‘Bad Boy,’ and he has always looked up to his father’s career in the entertainment industry as a source of motivation. But there’s one movie that Namashi wishes his dad hadn’t seen: ‘Gunda,’ a 1998 film with a convoluted plot that caused a lot of controversy.
Bashir Babbar penned the script and Kanti Shah directed the action film Gunda, which also starred Mukesh Rishi and Shakti Kapoor. The film’s cheesy speech and the casual attitude of its protagonists—especially Mithun’s character—made it a cult favourite despite the film’s problematic subject matter.
When asked during a recent media appearance if there was a film his father wished he hadn’t made, Mithun Chakraborty’s son Namashi said, “Gunda,” because of its notoriety. According to Namashi, the film’s substance is largely to blame for its notoriety, and many of his father’s fans now believe that he can only direct violent movies like “Gunda” because of it. Despite his father’s prominence, the actor acknowledges that he enjoys for its comedic storyline.
Mukesh Rishi, who played Bulla in “Gunda,” even acknowledged at one point that he was embarrassed by his lines from the film. The actor had previously admitted in an interview that he often felt embarrassed while reading Bulla’s lines because of the complex emotions they evoked in him. He still questioned his decision to do “Gunda,” despite the film’s commercial success.
