Movie critic Gippy Grewal and actress Sonam Bajwa make us chuckle in Carry on Jatta 3

The Carry On Jatta series, directed by Sm Kang, has been a major success, with the first installment launching Gippy Grewal stardom and establishing Punjabi cinema as a legitimate filmmaking genre. Carry On Jatta 3 is the third installment in the series and relies on the same kind of humour that Kang has honed, to varying degrees of success.

Gippy Grewal

The story of the film takes place in London, where eligible bachelor Jass (Gippy Grewal) is under pressure from his father Advocate Dhillon (Jaswinder Bhalla) to find a wife. Jass develops romantic feelings for Meet (Sonam Bajwa). There is, however, the standard twist. As a result of a disagreement between Meet’s uncle Dilawer (Nasir Chinyoti) and Advocate Dhillon, neither party is willing to go through with the wedding. Jass is determined to win over the woman of his dreams, so he and his friend Honey (Gurpreet Ghuggi) hatch a plan to do so. There is no shortage of crazy ideas, and every time Jass tries to solve a problem, he ends up in deeper trouble. Two pals enlist Goldie (Binnu Dhillon) to help them spin a web of falsehoods to cover up a single fib. Jass and Goldie spend the rest of the film trying to calm the chaos and convince their respective families to accept their upcoming marriage to Meet.

Read on to find out that “bold content” is another reason Sonam Bajwa has delayed her Bollywood debut.
The hilarity and funny dialogues of the Carry On Jatta series have become instant classics, often recited verbatim by delighted fans. The witty banter is still a major factor in keeping the third installment moving along. The jokes may be corny, but they’re timely and amusing all the same. Example: “The girl is a bomb,” says one character; “Do you intend to throw it on Ukraine?” replies another.

The movie aims to keep the laughter rolling with a combination of physical comedy, wordplay, and comedic situations. However, the tempo slows down significantly after the halfway point, just to pick back up again in the final third. The humour wears thin, and the film ultimately devolves into a chaotic hodgepodge. The picture rushes from one comedic situation to the next, and some of the sequences appear needless.

Most of the cast from the first film returns for the third installment of the franchise, including series regulars Binnu Dhillon, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Jaswinder Bhalla, as well as newcomer Sonam Bajwa. Nasir Chinyoti, a popular comedian from Pakistan, also makes an appearance. From the 2012 film Mujhe Kuch Nahi Pata, BN Sharma makes a brief appearance with a memorable line. Shinda Grewal’s naive charisma makes for captivating screen time. Famous for injecting his own brand of wacky humour and amusing dialogue, writer Naresh Kathooria also makes a cameo appearance in the film.

The film relies heavily on the comedic chemistry amongst its ensemble cast of supporting characters. There is a lot of hilarious chemistry between the characters thanks to the unique peculiarities they each bring to the story. People have caught on to the film’s wit and physical humour, and lines from the film are beginning to enter common parlance.
