To win over votes from lower castes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party has decided to increase the number of seats held by OBCs who are not from the Yadav family. Image via PTI Pay attention to this piece. As part of its preparations for the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for next year, the Samajwadi Party (SP) reorganised its Uttar Pradesh state executive committee on Sunday, giving additional power to non-Yadav OBC politicians.
While only five Yadav leaders made it into the newly formed 182-member state executive, 30 office-bearers are from non-Yadav OBCs because the party failed to defeat the BJP in last year’s Assembly elections. The number of Scheduled Castes is higher than the number of Yadavs by eight. There are five Brahmin leaders and two from the Scheduled Tribes among the office holders.
It is believed that the inclusion of 12 Muslims on the list is an effort to capture the growing number of Muslim voters who are considering supporting other candidates.
There are a total of 70 people on the state executive committee: 48 regular members and 62 invited guests. Naresh Uttam Patel, president of the party’s state unit, heads a team of office bearers that includes four vice presidents, three general secretaries, sixty-one secretaries, and one treasurer.
The new team is well-rounded, with respected leaders from every major social group participating. The BJP has spread false information that the SP is just for people of one caste. State president Naresh Uttar Patel told The Indian Express that the SP has “always given respect and representation to all castes and communities.”

The move by the Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, to give larger representation to non-Yadav OBCs is aimed at drawing the support of backward castes voters in the Lok Sabha elections following the exit of Om Prakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), and Keshav Dev Maurya’s Mahan Dal from the rainbow coalition that it had stitched in the run-up to the Assembly elections last year.
When the SP allied with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), the Socialist Bahujan Party (SBSP), the Mahan Dal, the Apna Dal (Kamerawadi), and the Janwadi Socialist Party (JSP) in the 2022 Assembly elections, it received a large number of votes from OBC voters who were not Yadav,s.

MLA Dara Singh Chauhan, an OBC leader from eastern UP, recently defected from the SP and joined the BJP.
In addition to Naresh Uttam Patel, a Kurmi (OBC) leader who serves as the SP’s state unit president, the party also boasts Yadav’s
Kurmi leader
There are now two additional Kurmi leaders in the state council. The new panel consists of four Nishad community leaders.
Notably, the BJP’s opponents, the Apna Dal (S) and the Nishad Party, each of which has a constituency among the Kurmi and Nishad peoples, are in an alliance with the BJP.

When broken down by region, 16 of the UP officials are located in eastern areas. Because of its partnership with the RLD in western UP (12), the party has also made room for local leaders there. Among the new state secretaries are Dharmvir Dabas of Ghaziabad, Shalini Rakesh of Baghpat, and Sunil Chaudhary of Noida. All three are prominent members of the Jat community.
Seven of the elected officials hail from the Yadav strongholds of Mainpuri (two), Kannauj (three), and Etawah (two).
