Shatrughan Sinha reveals about the time when he said ‘no’ to Deewaar and Sholay

It’s not uncommon for novel ideas to emerge during lively debates and discussions. A conversation like this took place when Shatrughan Sinha was introduced to the audience as a special guest and invitee at the Sahitya AajTak Kolkata 2023.
Some explosive revelations were made. Shotgun as Shatrughan Sinha is popularly known, announced to the audience that his two major regrets in life were his refusal to do Deewaar and Sholay. Two movies that would later propel Amitabh Bachchan to superstardom.
A ‘difference in opinion’ forced Shatrughan Sinha to resign, he said, despite the fact that the script for Deewaar had been in his possession for six months. A role for him in Sholay was considered before it went to Amitabh Bachchan, but ultimately he didn’t get the part. Shatrughan admitted that he was swamped with work at the time, so he was unable to schedule any convenient filming dates with them.
Although Shatrughan went on to discuss other topics, his deep regret over passing up these two films was palpable throughout his conversation. The interviewer followed up by asking if he had witnessed any ego clashes among the cast. Perhaps he was making a blatant allusion to his animosity towards Big B in the past. Shatrughan was candid with his answer. He admitted that everyone is human and such experiences are bound to affect people.
