The film is based on the Ramayana, a story from the Hindu canon that is considered to be among the most beloved in all of Indian mythology. The story follows Lord Ram, an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, as he sets out on a quest to save his wife Sita from the clutches of the evil king Ravana. He is accompanied on his journey by his devoted brother Lakshman and the monkey god Hanuman.
